One of the first questions I’m asked before a Mornington Peninsula family photography session s: “What should we wear?” The answer is simpler than you think! It’s not about being “perfect,” it’s about being comfortable, connected, and feeling like yourselves. Here are my go to tips to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully while keeping the vibe relaxed and fun.

Choose a Colour Palette

Think about tones that flow together rather than everyone wearing the exact same thing. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, or muted pastels always look timeless and work beautifully with the natural backdrops on the Mornington Peninsula. Avoid loud logos (or any logos!!!) or neon brights that pull focus away from your faces and connections.

Mix, Don’t Match

Coordinated doesn’t mean identical. Try mixing textures and styles that complement each other. For example, a linen dress, a knit jumper, and tailored pants in complementary shades will look far more effortless than everyone in matching jeans and tees. Yup, not watching, complimenting each other!

Comfort is Key

Especially for little ones! If the kids aren’t comfy, they’ll let us know pretty quickly. Soft fabrics, flowy dresses, and easy to move in clothes mean more fun and less fuss! Happy kids = natural, joy filled photos. Oh, and don’t forget a backup outfit you’re happy with! We try to stay clean as possible until the end where kiddos can be a bit more free, however every parent knows this could go wrong.

Layer and Add Texture

Layers and texture add depth to your photos. Cardigans, scarves, or jackets can be taken on and off for variety. Natural fabrics like linen, knits, or corduroy always photograph beautifully and bring an editorial feel to your gallery.

Keep Shoes Simple

For beach or at home sessions, barefoot often feels the most natural. If shoes are needed, neutral tones (sandals, boots, or simple sneakers) are perfect. Avoid super bright or branded shoes that stand out too much.

Consider The Locations Of Your Mornington Peninsula Family Photography Session

Make sure your outfits match the location! If you’re having a beach session, then a ball gown may look out of place! If you’re choosing somewhere like the cliffs of Flinders, then think about all the walking you will have to do – you’ll want to be comfortable.

Be Yourselves

The most important rule: wear what feels like you. If your little one insists on a tutu or you love that favourite cosy jumper, bring it along. The magic of family photography isn’t in polished outfits, it’s in capturing your connection just as you are. If beige/white isn’t your thing, then choose something different!! it’s not a must for photos.

Clothing helps set the tone, but the real beauty of family photos is the emotion, love, and connection shining through. Keep it simple, comfortable, and true to you. Together we’ll create timeless photos that feel like art but look like you.
